Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use white wine instead of red wine for mulled wine?

While traditional mulled wine is made with red wine, you can certainly use white wine for a lighter version known as 'mulled white wine' or 'gluhwein.' Just keep in mind that the flavor profile will differ, and you may want to adjust the spices accordingly.

What type of red wine is best for making mulled wine?

A medium-bodied red wine such as Merlot, Zinfandel, or Cabernet Sauvignon works best for mulled wine. These wines have enough structure to hold up against the spices and sweetness without being overpowering.

How long can I keep mulled wine after making it?

Mulled wine can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. When reheating, do so gently on the stove to avoid boiling, which can alter the flavors.

Can I make mulled wine in a slow cooker?

Yes, mulled wine can be easily made in a slow cooker. Simply combine all the ingredients and set it on low for a couple of hours, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully without the risk of boiling.

What are some common spices used in mulled wine?

Common spices include cloves, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, and allspice. Each spice contributes to the warm, aromatic profile of the drink, and you can adjust the quantities based on your personal taste.
